Silent Tagging – Another Bad Social Media Tactic

I try hard to stay current with social media trends and new strategies, but I have to admit, I had to research this one as I hadn’t heard of it before.

The basic premise is a business page will post an update promoting silent tagging. You then go to the page from your personal profile and leave a comment and tag your business. The final step is to go through the list of comments with tagged businesses and ‘like’ each one.  When I first saw this and read about it, I immediately thought “social media MLM.”

You can see an example below from a Lethbridge-based Facebook page.

While I can understand the idea and what they are trying to accomplish, I think it completely misses the boat and can negatively affect a business.

Reasons to avoid silent tagging

  • It’s not authentic. Social media is about real people and real relationships. This seems a little fake and forced.
  • Wrong audience. While increasing your Facebook page likes by 50-100 in a short time may seem appearing, are fellow business owners really your target audience? Are they going to buy your product/service?
  • Makes you look needy. Running techniques make your potential clients see your business as needy and distracts them from how great your business is.

The best way to grow your Facebook page is to share amazing and creative content that people want to share.

Please, please, please don’t fall for silent tagging.
