Weekly Video: Seth Godin – Doing Social Media Right

More and more businesses and educational institutions are becoming aware of the need to engage potential clients and students using social media.  More and more individuals are talking about social media everday (I’m one of them).  Jason Baer of Convince and Connect has a blog post that talks about the six dangerous fallacies of social media and point 6 is ‘social media is hard.’  He goes on to say that it is not hard, but complicated.  Things that are complicated can be done wrong.

In this weeks video, Seth Godin spend a few moments reminding us (I say reminding, because I know many of us know this already) of how to effectively engage and connect using social media.

Some of the points that I got from this video are:

  • the number of Facebook friends and Twitter followers is irrelevant
  • helping people achieve their goals is what is important
  • over time, as we help others, they will in turn help us

So from this day forth, lets all pledge to stop the superficial following and friending.  Friend to help, follow to inspire.

    I have to disagree with Mr. Godin. First, I don’t think that the two types of networking he discussed are mutually exclusive. In fact, they go perfectly hand-in-hand. That stranger that you befriend on Twitter because of similar interests might know just the right person to introduce you to for your next job prospect, or that random friend on Facebook might invite you to a party where you meet a future investor.

    Making connections, however one does it, is valuable. It is, indeed, important to do all that you can to add value to your network and always help where you can, but there will inevitably be “spammers” or “collectors” or people who contribute nothing. This doesn’t mean you can knock the entire practice. Honestly, numbers do matter – when you shout out to your network, you’ll get a better response with the more people you’re connected to and, in turn, you’ll be able to give back to more people.

    I agree with you and I agree with Seth. I think the people that have the focus ‘how many followers’ do I have are missing the boat. How are we connected with those who follow us and those we follow should be the focus. Last I checked I had 273 followers and I was following 248 people. I don’t network and interact with all 248 that I follow, but I do with many.

    I did like that Seth felt that the superficial networking was irrelevant and that is what I got from the video. I do agree that larger your network of like-minded friends, the more you will get out of the network.
